Rotations are short experiences in Emory research groups intended to help participants learn about the research and resources of the department and, ultimately, choose a research home for the pursuing the PhD. All scholars are required to complete three rotations before joining a research group.
Scholars will be enrolled in CHEM 504 to document their learning and achievement in rotations. Rotations effort and group selection should be guided by the syllabus for this course.
All rotation participants – new students, current students, and faculty – should also review and adhere to the Guidelines for Successful Rotations in this handbook.
Scholars are required to receive an “S” grade in CHEM 504 to progress in the chemistry PhD program. Once a scholar receives an “S” in CHEM 504, they may immediately begin work in their selected research group.
- If a scholar does not receive an “S” grade, they will be placed on probation and must successfully return to good standing within one semester to continue in the PhD program. In order to return to good standing, the scholar must re-enroll in CHEM 504 for the Spring semester and successfully complete the course by submitting a signed mentor/mentee agreement with a chemistry mentor.
